On Oct. 21, 2010, the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC’s) Consumer & Governmental Affairs Bureau and Wireless Telecommunications Bureau issued a Public Notice seeking comments on the advanced communications provisions of the Twenty-First Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2010 (CG Docket No. 10-213). Also known as the “Accessibility Act,” the act was signed into law by President Obama on Oct. 8, 2010, and is designed to ensure that individuals with disabilities have access to emerging Internet Protocol-based communication and video programming technologies in the 21st Century.
A new section of the Accessibility Act requires the FCC, within one year after enactment, to put into effect rules providing persons with disabilities access to advanced communications services and the equipment and networks used for such services.
The purpose of the Public Notice is to solicit public input on the meaning of key provisions in new sections of the act. Read comments filed by several VRS providers and the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and other consumer-based organizations by visiting the following links:
